PDLC smart film performance depends on both product quality and installation quality. Even good material can disappoint if the glass is not prepared correctly, the film is mishandled, wiring is planned late, or the wrong power supply is used.
This guide lists common mistakes to avoid before your smart film project starts.
Mistake 1: Measuring Only the Visible Glass Roughly
Small measurement errors can create exposed edges, fitting problems, or cable-exit conflicts. Measure every panel separately and record width, height, orientation, and frame condition. For large projects, use a panel schedule with IDs.
Do not assume all panels in a partition are identical. Site glass can vary.
Mistake 2: Ignoring Cable Exit Position
The cable exit should be planned before production or installation. If the wire exits on the wrong side, it may be visible, difficult to conceal, or impossible to connect cleanly.
Coordinate cable direction with frames, false ceiling, wall conduits, switches, and driver location.
Mistake 3: Applying Film on Contaminated Glass
Dust, silicone, paint, adhesive residue, oil, and construction debris can affect appearance and bonding. Existing glass should be inspected and cleaned according to approved instructions before installation.
If the glass has coatings, scratches, damage, or heavy contamination, discuss it before ordering.
Mistake 4: Using an Incompatible Power Supply
PDLC film is not connected directly like an ordinary decorative film. It requires a compatible driver matched to film type and connected area. Wrong electrical supply can cause poor switching, reliability issues, or safety concerns.
Confirm the driver rating, number of zones, and control method with the supplier.
Mistake 5: Poor Edge Protection
Edges and electrical connections are sensitive areas. Moisture, chemicals, physical damage, and repeated handling can reduce reliability. Edge protection should match the application, especially in bathrooms, clinics, kitchens, or high-cleaning spaces.
Mistake 6: Installing During Dusty Site Work
Smart film installation should happen when the site is clean enough for precision work. Avoid installation while grinding, painting, drilling, carpentry, or ceiling work is producing dust.
Material should also be stored safely before installation. Do not leave film exposed to heat, pressure, moisture, or sharp objects.
Mistake 7: Skipping Final Testing
After installation, test every panel in clear and frosted state. Check switching uniformity, control operation, cable strain relief, driver location, and user instructions. Record any observations before handover.
Pre-Installation Checklist
- Panel-wise measurements are approved.
- Cable exit positions are confirmed.
- Glass is inspected and cleaned.
- Drivers and controls match the connected load.
- Wiring route is ready.
- Site is clean and accessible.
- Edge protection method is agreed.
- Final testing and handover process is planned.
